Cumberland Gap Patriot

Andrew Evans

Andrew Evans born April 1, 1763 in Frederick County Virginia. Sometime
around 1776, Andrew's parents moved to Washington county Virginia. In
May 1779, Evans joined the VA Militia. For the next year, Evans fought
Shawnee Indians and local Tories.
Evans's First big battle was that of Kings Mountain SC fought on October
7, 1780. Evans was part of the four hundred men from Abingdon who went
to Sycamore Shoals to prepare for the up coming battle. Upon arrival at
Kings Mountain, Campbell's regiment divided into two wing groups. the
right wing moved into a gap while the left wing charged up the mountain,
fired a few rounds and were charged back down the mountain with a
bayonet charge from Ferguson's men.
Both wings of Campbell's command came together for the second charge.
Col. Edminston, Campbell's second in command, shouted " Let us at it
again, and the Virginians charged up the mountain again , only to be
forced back down by another bayonet charge. On the third attempt, the
Virginians made it to the top of the mountain, and then a ten minute
fire fight occurred between Ferguson's Tories and the Virginians.
Patriots located on the bottom of the mountain said the top of the
mountain looked like a smoldering volcano due to the great discharge of
weapons.
Half way during the battle, Captain Edminston decided he didn't like his
position on the mountain and led his men including Evans into the
hottest part of the battle, receiving another bayonet charge by De
Peyster's Rangers, an elite group of Tory rangers under Ferguson's
command. The fighting was so intense, Captain Edminston was Killed in
the fighting. Seeing a commander killed is usually enough force their
men to quit fighting, but it didn't stop the Virginians under Captain
Edminston's command. They fought more determined and harder than before.
After over an hour a fighting, Ferguson was finally killed and the
British Tories surrendered.
One of the reasons given for the British defeat and great loss of life of
British Tories were due to when the Virginians reached the summit of the
hill, the enemy was so crowded while making their retreat to the other
side of the mountain after the first 10 minute volley, that they refused
to fire a shot at the patriots. The Virginians drove them into a huddle
while the other Patriots of Kings mountain fired heavily upon them until
the Tories surrendered. Over 230 British Tories lay on the ground dead
before the surrender took place.

Evans's next big battle was Whitzell Mill's NC fought on march 6,
1781, about a week before the battle of Guilford Courthouse. British
Troops decided to occupy the mill. The NC militia along with the Va
militia unsuccessfully tired to take control of Whitzell Mill. The
militias were beaten back. After the battle was over, the Militia fled
to Reedy Fork river and were trying to cross it when the British showed
up again. A small skirmish took place, but the Patriots were soon able
to cross the river.
For the next two years, Evans fought Indians and Tories around Abingdon.
In April 1781, Evans fought Shawnee under the command of Lt.
Newell In August 1781, Evans participated in a successful rescue attempt
to rescue a family that had been captured by the Shawnee. In December
1782, under the command of Lt. James Snodgrass, Evans and the VA militia
marched against the Cherokee located along the Clinch River, and
defeated them.
After the war, Evans married jean Creswell and had 10 children
from this Union. Evans began moving around a lot, living in Knox,
Grainger, McMinn, and Rhea Counties TN before settling down. In 1803,
Evan's wife Jean died and Evans soon married a woman named Sarah . They
soon had one child from this union. Evans died on April 9, 1839 and was
buried in Rhea County.
